Books are not made to be believed, but to be subjected to inquiry. When we consider a book, we mustn’t ask ourselves what it says but what it means.

Umberto Eco, what a name! Umberto Eco was and Italian medievalist, philosopher, semiotician, cultural critic, political and social commentator, and novelist. Most of us know Umberto Eco as the author of is his popular 1980 novel The Name of the Rose, a historical mystery combining semiotics in fiction with biblical analysis, medieval studies, and literary theory, and Foucault’s Pendulum, his 1988 novel which touches on similar themes.
